f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS has been co-operating with Airbus and other partners on the development of components for wireless sensor/actuator networks for application in commercial aircraft, mainly in the aircraft cabin.
Wireless networks and technologies have become an indispensable part or our everyday life. Building automation is making use of wireless platforms to connect sensors and actuators with control and monitoring systems. Such wireless sensor networks promise a number of advantages for applications inside commercial aircraft, mainly flexibility, cost reduction in aircraft manufacturing, as well as a contribution to weight reduction. The safety and reliability requirements are very high, demanding technologies and solutions which are adapated to the application onboard aircraft. One key element is the use of a dedicated, aviation-exclusive radio frequency band which precludes interference with commercial wireless systems such as WLAN or Bluetooth.
f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS has developed practical solutions for a wireless sensor network. They comprise of miniaturized sensor/actuator nodes and a "Wireless Data Concentrator" which links one subnet with the existing cabin backbone network.
The R&D work currently continues until 2016 in the framework of the German national aerospace research program.
