We develop our own AVIONICS SUBSYSTEMS and much more

f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS offers avionics products and convincing development services for everything to do with specialized avionics system solutions and aircraft control systems.

The implementation of turnkey systems including approval, manufacture and maintenance complements our range of services. This includes in particular software development and verification in accordance with the aviation standard RTCA DO-178C and device qualification in accordance with RTCA DO-160G.

We are certified by EASA in accordance with JAR-21 and JAR-145. As an experienced manufacturing and maintenance company for aviation equipment, we develop high-quality, wide-ranging technologies and products for our customers.

Our employees are regularly involved in the international customer environment and work also on EU and ESA projects.

Moreover, some of our team members are authorized to handle
classified information.

Based on our current product portfolio (radios, Mode-S transponders, display systems), we implement the individual requirements of our customers. We have built up a network of competent partners over many years. We can therefore also offer avionics solutions from a single source in the area of the new European CNS/ATM concepts.
We use various cockpit display systems that we have developed ourselves and which we configure according to the requirements of our customers. Typical applications for which we develop turnkey solutions include moving maps, traffic displays based on ADS-B and FLARM, and terrain displays.
In addition, we have software libraries available for the implementation of customer-specific display solutions.

Project Examples

Link-22 Modem – Elbit Systems

The content of the assignment is the development of a Link 22 device for military communication until it is ready for series production. The order includes all associated activities, including prototyping and commissioning of the device as well as qualification tests. f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS GmbH therefore has the role of a general contractor for the product development.
The work packages include the acceptance and testing of provided software and therefore the close cooperation with the software development which is on-going during the same time. The order also includes the time-critical production of two devices in series production.
Link 22 is a secure digital radio link in the HF and UHF bands, primarily used by military forces as a tactical data link. Link 22 is a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) secure radio system that provides beyond line-of-sight (BLOS) communications. It interconnects air, surface, subsurface, and ground-based tactical data systems, and it is used for the exchange of tactical data among the military units of the participating nations.

Transponder Receiver x-BNK for Wind Farms

The use of demand-controlled night marking (BNK) will be mandatory for many operators of wind turbines in Germany from 2021. This can be done using a device for receiving and evaluating transponder signals from aircraft.

For this purpose, Deutsche Windtechnik, in cooperation with f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS has developed a holistic and independent BNK system.

The x-BNK transponder receiver developed by f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS is the central component of the entire system. The device records signals from approaching air traffic participants, verifies them using robust algorithms and automatically activates the hazard lights of the wind turbines if necessary.

The system is available exclusively from our partner Deutsche Windtechnik.

Digital Aeronautical Communication Systems

The air traffic management of the future relies on a significantly stronger communication network of all involved parties.

From 2025, the introduction of modern, digital radio connections should create the basis for an integrated air traffic management. Communication methods based on the LDACS standard (L-Band Digital Aeronautical Communication System), which is available for communication, navigation and surveillance tasks (CNS), is considered to have particularly good prospects.

In the INTAIRNET project within the German Aviation Research Program (LuFo), f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS is involved in the definition and technology development of digital radios for the General Aviation target market. Within this programme, new services and applications based on the LDACS technology are also being examined. The start of a new product development can be expected from 2023.

Data Logging Unit (DLU) for electric flight taxis (VTOL)

Under contract with an aircraft manufacturer f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS currently develops a Data Logging Unit (DLU) for use onboard an all-electric air taxi. f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS has been tasked with the development and qualification of the DLU. The DLU is the electronic component of the VC2-1 Avionics system that gather multiple data stream from VC2-1 and store up to 30 flight hours on memory. It will have to manage the recording of all stream in internal memories and a fast upload of the stored data on a ground device. The currently foreseen data bandwidth lies in the 3.9 MBps overall with a main contribution from the 18 motor controllers.

DRONE AVIONICS

f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS is developing a new product family to equip the wide range of future UAS (unmaned air systems, i.e. drones) with radio technologies for safe airspace integration.

In the frame of projects within the German Aviation Research Program (LuFo) such as MASTER-UAS and MASTER360, we are therefore developing avionics solutions with the objective to integrate unmanned aircraft as best as possible into today’s air traffic system. The basis of this approach is to take up existing and proven procedures in aviation (transponder technology) and supplement them with modern procedures (mobile communications). The concept was already successfully developed and tested through the multi-mode transceiver (MMT) on board a drone.

MODE S BEACON for the french company ATERMES

On behalf of the French company ATERMES, our Mode S transponder TRT800H has been expanded for use as a Mode S beacon as follows:

  • The transponder is integrated into a “Remote Beacon”, which will be used for the long-loop tests of the Mode S station.
  • The Beacon behaves like an ICAO Mode S level 2 aircraft transponder with additional features such as programmable attenuation and range as well as specific Mode S protocols.
  • The Beacon is designed for integration into a Mode S radar system with 24-hour continuous operation.

VHF TEST CAMPAIGN

On behalf of Eurocontrol, f.u.n.k.e AVIONICS successfully tested and analysed various VHF airborne radios and ground stations based on specific criteria as part of the coordinated introduction of the 8.33 kHz channel spacing for voice radio connections in Europe

LPAT

On behalf of the British air traffic control NATS, the successful development and testing of a low-power ADS-B transceiver (LPAT) took place up to series maturity. Our traffic display system TM250 and the Mode S transponder TRT800H formed the basis for this development. LPAT is suitable for temporary installation in small aircraft and other air sports equipment and receives various traffic data (via ADS-B, FLARM and Mode S), which are presented to the pilot on an integrated display.

ADS-B REPEATER STATION

On behalf of Australia’s air traffic control (Airservices Australia), our Mode S transponder TRT800H was upgraded to an ADS-B repeater station, which receives and sends ADS-B signals with a frequency of 1090 MHz. This improves the reception radius of ADS-B ground stations for ADS-B signals from aircraft which cannot be received directly, for example due to the terrain.

CABINLINK

In cooperation with partners such as Airbus and Diehl Aerospace, f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS was involved in the development of hardware components for a wireless sensor network for the aircraft cabin in the context of numerous national technology projects (SINTEG, PROTEG-O, KASI). These components consist of miniaturized sensor/actuator nodes and a so-called “wireless data concentrator”, which connects a sub-network to the existing cabin network.
